“ ‘Raiz’, the first release on the Oito//Oito Discos label, draws the musical focus towards the sound archives of Michel Giacometti, a French ethnomusicologist who dedicated his life to studying the oral traditions of Portugal which had become either lost or forgotten, with his collections still exhibited today in the Museum of Portuguese Music in Estoril. As with their previous releases, the duo carefully manage the source material and interweave it with their Acid House undertones, with both the original cuts ‘Ceifeiras’ and ‘A Poda’ doing a beautiful job at merging the powerful vocals with driving bass lines and rhythms. The opener in particular has a deep mysticism to it, the vocals leading the line as razor sharp pads craft a pulse alongside a steady but powerful drum structure. ‘A Poda’ takes things in a trippy-er direction, with the vocals stretched out in that prog house style that keeps the mind ticking over and the body left to its own devices. The breakdowns in this track are very effective, and really portray the soul of the original vocal performance and allow for the listener to connect with the wider feeling being conveyed. On the flip, the duo asked producers Switchdance and Terra Chã to put their spin on ‘Ceifeiras’, and the results only add to the atmosphere. Swtichdance takes things down into murky depths, with a low slung beat expertly interspersed with driving bass notes, as sweeping chordal lines meander up above, giving a whole new angle to the original and winning over our hearts. Terra’s version injects some swing into proceedings, with looping chordal stabs pulsating through the middle along with some beautiful melodic additions that exalt and inspire in equal measure.
Balanced, referential, blissful, dynamic. All this, and more, feature heavily on the first edition of Oito//Oito Discos, so why not come along and meander through time and space - its worth the trip… “

“ 'Raiz', o primeiro lançamento na editora Oito//Oito Discos, atrai o foco musical para os arquivos de som de Michel Giacometti, um etnomusicólogo francês que dedicou a sua vida ao estudo das tradições orais de Portugal que se tinham perdido ou esquecido, com as suas coleções ainda hoje expostas no Museu da Música Portuguesa no Estoril. Tal como nos seus lançamentos anteriores, o duo gere cuidadosamente o material de origem e entrelaça-o com os seus sub-tons Acid House, com os cortes originais 'Ceifeiras' e 'A Poda' a fazerem um belo trabalho de fusão dos poderosos vocais com linhas de baixo e ritmos de condução. A abertura, em particular, tem um profundo misticismo, os vocais conduzindo a linha como almofadas afiadas de lâmina de barbear, produzindo um pulso ao lado de uma estrutura estável mas poderosa de bateria. 'A Poda' leva as coisas numa direção mais trippyer, com os vocais esticados naquele estilo prog house que mantém a mente a fazer tic-tac e o corpo deixado à sua própria sorte. As quebras nesta faixa são muito eficazes, e retratam realmente a alma do desempenho vocal original e permitem ao ouvinte conectar-se com a sensação mais ampla que está a ser transmitida. Na virada, a dupla pediu aos produtores Switchdance e Terra Chã que pusessem a sua rotação em 'Ceifeiras', e os resultados só contribuem para a atmosfera. Swtichdance leva as coisas a profundidades obscuras, com uma batida baixa e habilmente intercalada com notas de baixo de condução, como linhas de acordes varrendo-se para cima, dando um ângulo totalmente novo ao original e conquistando os nossos corações. A versão de Terra Chã injeta algum baloiço nos procedimentos, com batidas de cordas em loop pulsando através do meio, juntamente com algumas belas adições melódicas que exaltam e inspiram em igual medida.
Equilibrado, referencial, bem-aventurado, dinâmico. Tudo isto, e muito mais, está fortemente presente na primeira edição da Oito//Oito Discos, por isso porque não aparecer e vaguear pelo tempo e pelo espaço - vale a pena a viagem... “
