“O que é ter sentido de si, quando as paisagens e os seres existem em coevolução e cohabitação? Que gestos desenvolvemos para nos sintonizarmos com as várias experiências intraduzíveis e formas desconhecidas de ser? Como investigamos se as montanhas sonham connosco, tal como nós sonhamos com elas? Se sabemos que a média da população humana tem entre três e oito sonhos por noite, quantos são os sonhos interespécies que moldam as noites do nosso mundo? Será que os peixes sonham com eles próprios? Será que as borboletas têm sonhos lúcidos? São ovelhas eléctricas aquilo com que andróides realmente sonham?
Investigando como a magia, a arte, a ciência e os sonhos se constituem e se manifestam através de todos os seres, The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish mergulha nas práticas espirituais, criativas e científicas que nos convidam a reavaliar a forma como partilhamos este planeta com todas as criaturas e formas de vida.
O festival analisa o papel que os sonhos desempenham nas nossas vidas. Compreendendo os sonhos como experiências de sono e como zonas limiares em que coexistem o cogito e o onírico, o festival congrega artistas, historiadores, cientistas e figuras da arquitetura e música para partilhar os seus conhecimentos e contar as histórias que celebram o emaranhado entre o eu, a mente e o planeta.
The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish inicia-se com um encontro de dois dias no Porto e continuará em Londres, através de podcasts, vídeos e outros lançamentos até ao início de 2023. Terá como convidados Yussef Agbo-Ola/Olaniyi Studio, Federico Campagna, Nicola S. Clayton, Onome Ekeh, Cru Encarnação, Alex Jordan, Sophie Lunn-Rockliffe, Nahum Mantra, Hatis Noit, e Rain Wu, e inclui uma projecção de filmes dos artistas Mariana Caló e Francisco Queimadela, Rosalind Fowler, Derek Jarman, Dominique Knowles, Ben Rivers e Himali Singh Soin.
A identidade visual do projeto foi criada por Giles Round.
The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish é organizado em colaboração com o projecto General Ecology pela Serpentine. É o quinto da série The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish, que reflete sobre inteligência, senciência e existência através de mundos mais-que-humanos. As edições anteriores abordaram a consciência animal, humana e artificial, a linguagem e comunicação interespécies (Language, ZSL London Zoological Society, Maio 2018); a complexidade interior, oos rganismos em expansão, a simbiose e os enredos (We Have Never Been One, Ambika P3, University of Westminster, Dezembro 2018); sentimento vegetal, inteligência, comunicação com o mundo vegetal e formas de erotismo, misticismo e cura (PLANTSEX e Com Plantas, Cinema Lumière / Instituto Francês e EartH Hackney, Abril/Maio 2019); e a vida emaranhada do solo e da terra (The Understory of the Understory, online no website themind.fish, concebido pelo artista Giles Round, Dezembro 2020).
A série The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish tem a curadoria de Lucia Pietroiusti (Fundadora, Assessora Estratégica do projecto General Ecology, na Serpentine) e Filipa Ramos (Directora Artística da Galeria Municipal do Porto). As edições 1-4 foram co-curadas e produzidas com Kostas Stasinopoulos (Curador dos Programas Públicos, Serpentine) e Holly Shuttleworth (Produtora).”

“What is a sense of self, when landscapes and beings exist in co-evolution and co-habitation? What manners have we developed to attune ourselves to the various untranslatable experiences and unknowable ways of being? How do we investigate if mountains dream of us as we do of them? If we know that the average human has between three and eight dreams per night, how many are the interspecies dreams that shape our world’s nights? Do fish dream of themselves? Do butterflies have lucid dreams? Is electric sheep what androids really dream of?
Investigating how magic, art, science and dreams constitute one another and manifest themselves across all beings, The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish dwells in those spiritual, creative and scientific practices that invite us to re-evaluate how we share this planet with all creatures and life forms.
The festival investigates the role dreams play in our lives. Understanding dreams as both sleep-time experiences and as threshold zones in which the cogito and the oneiric coexist, the festival gathers architects, artists, historians, philosophers, musicians and scientists to share their knowledge and tell the stories that celebrate the entanglement between self, mind and planet.
The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish begins with a two-day gathering in Porto and will continue in London via podcasts, videos and other releases through to early 2023. Participants include Yussef Agbo-Ola/Olaniyi Studio, Federico Campagna, Nicola S. Clayton, Onome Ekeh, Cru Encarnação, Alex Jordan, Sophie Lunn-Rockliffe, Nahum Mantra, Hatis Noit, and Rain Wu and includes a screening of films by artists Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, Rosalind Fowler, Derek Jarman, Dominique Knowles, Ben Rivers and Himali Singh Soin.

The Shape of a Circle in the Dream of a Fish is organised in collaboration with Serpentine’s General Ecology project. It is the fifth in the festival series, The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish, which thinks about intelligence, sentience and existence across more-than-human worlds. Previous editions have addressed animal, human and artificial consciousness, language and interspecies communication (Language, ZSL London Zoological Society, May 2018); interior multitude, swarming organisms, symbiosis and entanglements (We Have Never Been One, Ambika P3, University of Westminster, December 2018); plant sentience, intelligence, communication with the vegetal world and forms of eroticism, mysticism and healing (PLANTSEX and With Plants, Cinema Lumière / French Institute and EartH Hackney, April/May 2019); and the teeming, entangled life of the ground, land, soil and Earth (The Understory of the Understory, online at the specially created website themind.fish, designed by artist Giles Round, December 2020).
